Ethereum's Pectra upgrade has been launched on the main network recently.
If Ethereum is a city, then Pectra is like upgrading urban infrastructure.
- Repave the road (improve the user experience).
Improve traffic flow (reduce DA costs).
Modern power grid (verification node operation).
This is not something new skyline or dazzling skyscrapers. It's a boring but crucial job that makes the entire city faster and safer, and makes everyone living there better.
Pectra is not just about gradually improving the craft of developers or cutting some gwei. This upgrade actually completely changed the economy and user experience of Ethereum-based applications, enough to unlock new product categories and business models (see the list at the end of the article for details!).
Pectra is the price-performance turning point of Ethereum
Pectra bundles 11 Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) at Ethereum’s execution and consensus layers to address some of its most troubled pain points: clumsy user experience, high data availability costs, and slow validator operations.
But why did Pectra become a "turning point"? Because it marks the cost- effectiveness tipping point of Ethereum: a key threshold, the product becomes more attractive due to changes in the cost structure of the product relative to performance/value.
Pectra’s protocol improvements can now drive on-chain economy and user experience beyond cost-effective thresholds, thus giving birth to a new category of viable products and business models. Miracles happen when lower costs, better performance and better user experience are perfectly integrated.
Reduce on-chain costs below pain threshold
Prior to Pectra, gas operating on many on-chain (micro-perpetual transactions, low-value NFT coins, bulk-return rebalancing) were priced too expensive or unpredictable to support sustainable projects.
Pectra's approximately 30% to 50% Gas cuts and blob throughput boosts compress these costs to levels that are "not worth considering" (e.g., coin fees below $0.05, micro-perpet transactions below $0.10). This means that today's "icing on the cake" feature will become the core revenue driver in the future.
How it works:
Proto‑Danksharding and Blobs (EIP‑4844 + EIP‑7691): Pectra introduces the first layer of Danksharding through Blobs, the so-called “proto‑danksharding”. Blobs is a new data availability primitive that decouples the Rollup load from the execution state of Ethereum. You can think of Blobs as extra cargo space on an airplane: instead of stuffing all parcels into the cabin, cargo is unloaded into the cabin, freeing up space and reducing costs. Rollups like Optimism and Arbitrum can now increase the amount of call data per block by up to 50%, while the price is reduced in half. For end users, this means that transaction fees can be reduced by 30% to 50% when exchanging tokens, bridging assets, or interacting with the DeFi protocol on L2.
Calldata Gas Repricing (EIP-7623): Calldata (original instruction sent by the user to the smart contract) will significantly reduce costs. Imagine stamps: If each stamp is at a lower price, you can send longer letters without spending too much. Pectra reduces Gas costs per byte, reducing the cost of batch transactions (multi-send airdrops, batch vault rebalancing, multi-NFT minting) by up to 40%. Builders can bundle multiple operations into a single transaction, thus avoiding unpredictable expense surges.
Repair user experience with major improvements
Wallet approval fatigue. Gas pop-up window. Multi-step registration process. These clumsy experiences are tolerant to hardcore fans of cryptocurrencies, but are completely unfamiliar to a wider audience.
Pectra's Gas abstraction and smoother user experience make on-chain interactions as smooth as the one-click experience of Web2. When users no longer have to worry about MetaMask or Gas restrictions, the user size can eventually scale from millions to hundreds of millions.
How it works:
Gas Abstract and Smart Contract Wallet (EIP-7702 + EIP-7840) : Pectra improves "account code" support, allowing smart contract wallets to sponsor Gas directly for end users. Imagine driving past the toll station and discovering that your favorite app has paid you the tolls – no need to park or search for tokens. MetaMask no longer pops up every time you approve or redeemed. Developers can bundle the painfully familiar process of “Approval—> Redemption—> Approval—> Cross-chain bridge—> Approval” into a single transaction paid by DApp, significantly reducing entry resistance for non-technical users.
Smoother staking process (EIP-7251 + EIP-7002) : Improvements in staking user experience are usually not noticed, but they are of great significance. Pectra raises the validator staking cap from 32 ETH to 2,048 ETH, allowing node operators to consolidate staking, just like combining small bank accounts into a high-yield fund, simplifying management and reducing fees. The triggerable exit mechanism becomes instantly effective, which simplifies the user experience of the liquid staking platform and makes the staking operation as intuitive as withdrawals on an ATM.
Small engine tuning (EIP-7846, EIP-7617) : Small gas refunds and opcode tuning may sound trivial, but they accumulate in thousands of contracts, reducing microseconds and microgwei calculated on the day-to-day chain.
What is Pectra's prediction for the future of Ethereum
Optimism about Ethereum’s “achieving goals”
Ethereum critics often point to its slow governance and fragmented client support. Pectra dispelled these concerns: In less than 24 months, Ethereum has successively launched upgrades to Shanghai (April 2023), Dencun (March 2024) and now Pectra (May 2025). 11 EIPs are coordinated, without backtracking, and no turbulence. I expect future upgrade frequency to be higher than the current annual upgrade frequency. The biggest gain is that Ethereum’s “upgrade flywheel” is running at full speed, reducing the protocol risks for developers and investors.
Better governance = more convenient delivery
Pectra's "meta-EIP" umbrella (EIP-7600) shows the progress in Ethereum governance. Multiple working groups, off-chain forums and on-chain signals converge into a unified whole. It's like multiple teams working together to launch space missions at the best time—but this time it's once a year, not once a few decades. Now builders can view the upgrade schedule as a predictable milestone rather than a moving target.
Roadmap confidence = investor confidence
By launching proto-Danksharding today, Ethereum paves the way for the full implementation of Danksharding in the near future. After Pectra, builders and investors can reasonably build a transparent roadmap to achieve a 1 million TPS throughput on the L2 network. With the steadily lower Gas cost lower limit, business models can predict transactions below $0.10, shifting long- term planning from guesswork to fine-grained predictions.

New opportunities for builders and founders
In addition to being able to build existing DeFi or NFT applications at a lower cost, Pectra has also changed the types of applications worth building. Micro-sustainable market. Continuous auction. Gas-sponsored social dApp. Enterprise-level pledge as a service. These features and products become practical and can lead to substantial profits.
Pectra is not only another upgrade, but also a turning point in the Ethereum basic layer enhancement function from incremental optimization to commercialization.
Here is an incomplete list of products and use cases following Pectra :
DeFi
-
Mini Perpetual Contracts and Mini Auctions
Calldata costs are halved, meaning you can start a sustained auction of per second perpetual contract markets or real-world assets at an entrance fee of less than $0.05. Imagine running a micro-stock exchange on each block. -
Composable revenue library and arrangement
Blob throughput makes linking 5-10 revenue strategies in a single multiple call as easy as ordering multiple dishes with one click and paying a delivery fee. Startups can charge performance fees on an administrative fee basis, creating recurring revenue for decentralized portfolio managers. -
Flash‑Bundle SDK
Package Lightning Loan, MEV Capture, and Gas Sponsorship into one SDK. It's like bundling the internet, TV, and phone into a subscription, only for high- frequency DeFi primitives.
Consumer Social Applications + NFT
-
Large-scale casting:
Pectra’s calldata repricing technology reduces gas costs by about 30%, and now the total cost of 10,000 castings is less than $1,000 – making the cost of generating art casting as cheap as a viral social media campaign. While still catching up with compressed NFT/cNFT on Solana, the latter can achieve a low- cost 1 million castings, it undoubtedly made huge progress. -
Social entry smart contract wallets sponsored by Gas can subsidize users’ first few transactions, such as offering free first cup of coffee or zero-fee transactions, transforming cold wallets into active community members through frictionless token interactions.
Games and mobile apps
-
The smooth in-game economic system pre-recharged Gas points unlock dozens of micro transactions during each game. Imagine batch processing of manufacturing, market bidding, trophy collection and other operations, all operations are completed in one go. This brings user experience of 3A-level mobile games without pop-ups.
-
Dynamic session compression client records off-chain operations and submits a single compressed blob at the end of the session. It's like zipping a bunch of files before uploading, keeping gas costs smooth and predictable.
Enterprises and infrastructure
-
Enterprise-level staking + hosting increases the validator cap to 2,048 ETH, reducing the number of nodes in large staking pools by 64 times. Imagine combining multiple offices into one headquarters, which greatly improves efficiency and creates a more diverse "business district".
-
Stateless + Light Client Service
The state hash unification mechanism of EIP-7685 lays the foundation for Ethereum for the Verkle tree, thus supporting stateless clients. This transformation is like streaming content on demand, rather than carrying a library full of books or CDs. -
Data Availability Middleware
Blob proves to power off-chain DA networks (also known as middleware) and guarantee 99.99% availability, just as CDNs guarantee rapid global delivery of content.
SDK and Tools
-
Gas Sponsorship and Relay Library The new JS/TS SDK will integrate bundler selection, fee estimation, and gas sponsorship into a simple function call—similar to the payment API that integrates credit card transactions.
-
Calldata compressor and multi-call optimizer
The Hardhat/Foundry plugin analyzes contract flow, automatically converts calls into blobs, and displays Gas savings estimates at compile time, just like a code inspector, highlighting inefficiencies. This greatly improves the quality of life of developers. -
The Observability Dashboard will feature a suite of metrics for blob utilization, sponsor ROI, and proto‑dank load allocation, providing advanced analytics for builders who need fine-grained visibility.
Post-Pectra Era: The Time to Build and Upgrade
Pectra won't grab headlines with dazzling features. It won't completely remodel Ethereum. It strengthens Ethereum by strengthening the core while increasing the caps of on-chain economy and experience.
The various products that were once on the verge of survival have not only become practical, but also financed and scalable. This is a business turning point for Ethereum, which removes huge obstacles to mainstream user experience, consolidates Ethereum’s accelerated pace of upgrades, and unlocks a new product category from micro-apps to consumer applications.
Now let’s build Pectra native functional prototype products and seize the new advantages brought by Pectra. Next-generation Ethereum-powered products are coming soon.
