Ethereum is on the verge of a major breakthrough. The rapid development of zkEVM allows us to rebuild Layer1 to support both scalability, verifiability, security, and censorship resistance. L2 is constantly strengthening to meet users' usage needs and is eager to double the use of Ethereum as its trust source. In short, the world is ready to welcome the arrival of the world's computers.
These major innovations not only bring great benefits to our users, but also allow us to attract more users. This means a lot: this may be the best time for Ethereum to deploy our technology and our values globally.
In response, we must rethink the current approach to designing, developing and managing the protocol. The process of "delivery agreements" is very complex and requires us to actively respond to those difficult-to-express and even difficult to meet. We have a responsibility to use our skills to benefit the wider community.
Performing this mission requires our team, the protocol R&D team within the Ethereum Foundation (EF), to take focus and collaboration to a new level. This means we need to double down on areas where EF has unique domain knowledge and deep expertise that are unparalleled in our ecosystem: from writing mission- critical code, to publishing breakthrough research, to coordinating large projects.
To support this vision, we are changing the way we operate, repositioning three strategic goals: expanding L1 layer, expanding Blob layer, and enhancing the user experience. In fact, this means reorganizing our teams and building a clear coordination structure around these strategic goals.
This also means that some members of the agreement R&D team will no longer continue to work at the Ethereum Foundation. We hope these people will continue to stay in the Ethereum ecosystem and encourage others who are forming teams to find them.
The changes we announce today are different from the way we have worked in the past, but we think these changes will take us on a path that is more responsive and efficient. To commemorate the beginning of this new chapter and new structure, we want to re-introduce the "Protocol R&D Team" to the world under the new name "Protocol".
Strategic Measures
Over the past year, many of us have believed that we need to better articulate our priorities. In our communication with the community, we collectively thought and proposed three ambitious goals that need to be achieved in the short term: expanding L1, expanding blobs, and improving user experience. Successfully achieving these goals is the most valuable work we can do for our community and it is our responsibility to achieve it.
Now we must ensure that these goals directly drive our attention and resource allocation. Now each goal has been mapped to a strategic plan of Protocol, a shared workspace that brings together our complementary talent. We encourage each team at Protocol to think about how their work supports us in implementing these strategic plans.
Crucial to our execution efforts, we have leaders in our teams with community trust. We are more explicitly appointing leaders to accelerate the implementation of strategic initiatives and thus strengthen accountability.
Specifically, the following personnel are responsible for ensuring that EF implements each of its strategic objectives:
-
Expanding L1: Tim Beiko & Ansgar Dietrichs, Ethereum will provide sufficient block space on L1 to accommodate all asset issuance, governance, DeFi and L2 settlement activities without affecting reliability.
-
Extended L2: Alex Stokes & Francesco D'Amato, Ethereum will provide the best data access layer. Scaling throughput of data access on Layer-1 and ensuring it becomes the most attractive product in the entire ecosystem.
-
Improve user experience: Barnabé Monnot and Josh Rudolf provide individuals and institutions with a unified, seamless and secure experience in the Ethereum ecosystem.
They will be supported by Dankrad Feist, who will serve as strategic consultant in all areas and lead the projects developed to advance these goals.
team
More than ever, we need to mobilize all Protocol members simultaneously to solve the problem. Rapidly converting research results into prototypes and then into production means we need a closer cycle of collaboration and feedback. Over the past few years, we have seen more communication bridges between teams and bring tangible results. With a shared vision, we must ensure that our shared home has an excellent working environment.
Being open to working with every member of Protocol requires us to share expectations with each other and to have a high level of trust in each of us to deliver results at the best possible level. Team Leaders will be responsible for ensuring that their members meet our excellent technical standards and continue to grow and continue to surpass themselves.
Protocol is now a more united, streamlined organization with a more focused team. The updated organizational chart is as follows:
Community
The protocol itself cannot complete all tasks. Our ecosystem is thanks to the efforts of many other core R&D teams who reinforce our efforts and turn functionality into reality. Our role is not to replace these teams, but to set high standards for ourselves in working with them.
The agreement is pushing us to reconfigure the main governance forums and introduce new governance forums. It is crucial to continue sending the right signal and converting it into action.
We are looking for new members to join us and work together to become part of the broader core development community of Ethereum. We believe that the two positions of User Experience Director and Performance Engineering Director are crucial to help us solve practical problems for Ethereum users. In addition, we welcome outstanding applicants who are passionate about our mission, please let us know through our general application form.
So, let's take action together and deliver the agreement.
