Elon Musk has initiated conversations about using blockchain technology in the newly created U.S. Department of Government Effectiveness, according to people familiar with the matter. This is the latest sign that the Trump administration hopes to boost the digital asset industry.

Musk, who is spearheading efforts to improve government efficiency, has raised the idea of ​​using digital ledgers to reduce government costs to close allies, said a person familiar with the matter who asked not to be identified because the discussions are private. The person said there has been discussion about using blockchain to track federal spending, protect data, make payments and even manage buildings.

A person familiar with the conversation said officials from the Department of Government Effectiveness have met with representatives from several public blockchains to evaluate their technology.

The Department of Government Effectiveness, created by Trump’s January 20 executive order, is charged with modernizing federal technology and software to maximize government efficiency and productivity. Trump has said the team will work with the White House Office of Management and Budget to identify spending that can be cut and finalize recommendations by July 4, 2026.
