Bybit CEO Ben Zhou issued a statement to announce the latest executive summary of the stolen funds incident on March 20: The total amount of stolen funds reached US$1.4 billion (about 500,000 ETH). Of these, 68.57% are still traceable, 27.59% are no longer trackable, and 3.84% have been frozen.
Fund flow analysis:
The untrackable funds mainly flow to the currency mixer, and then transferred to the P2P and over-the-counter trading platform through the cross-chain bridge. Recent observations show that the North Korean hacker organization (DPRK) mainly uses Wasabi currency mixer. After Wasabi cleaning, a small amount of BTC was transferred to CryptoMixer, Tornado Cash and Railgun, and subsequently cross-chain redemption was carried out through platforms such as Thorchain, eXch, Lombard, LiFi, Stargate and SunSwap. Finally, they enter the OTC or peer-to-peer (P2P) fiat currency exchange service.
ETH Where to go:
432,748 ETH (84.45%, approximately US$1.21 billion) were transferred from Ethereum to BTC via Thorchain. Of these, 67.25% (342,975 ETH, approximately US$960 million) were exchanged for 10,003 BTC and spread to 35,772 wallets (average 0.28 BTC per wallet); 1.17% (5,991 ETH, approximately US$16.77 million) remained in the 12,490 wallets on the Ethereum chain (average 0.48 ETH per wallet).
Where to go for BTC:
944 BTC (6.34%, approximately US$90.62 million) entered the Wasabi currency mixer; 531 BTC (equivalent 18,206 ETH, 3.57%) were transferred from the BTC chain back to Ethereum through Thorchain.
5,443 reports have been received in the past 60 days, 70 of which are valid, calling for more bounty hunters to crack the coin mixer to join.
